Next, the seventh section determines their causes. The causes of the five eyes have general and specific [aspects]. Discussing them generally, all practices jointly obtain them. Therefore the Pañcaviṃśati says: "The bodhisattva's cultivation and study of prajñāpāramitā purifies the five eyes." Prajñā being so, the other practices are all likewise. Why does it not say 'generates the five eyes', but instead says 'purifies'? Nāgārjuna himself explains: "The bodhisattva originally possesses the flesh eye, and also possesses the [other] four eyes, but because they are obscured by fractions of defilements, they do not attain purity. Just as a mirror is luminous by nature, but due to grime it does not see; if one removes its grime, its illumination is as of old. Like that, the divine eye, wisdom eye, Dharma eye, and Buddha eye are not newly arisen, hence they are not termed 'generated'. What is originally possessed is now revealed, hence it only says 'purifies'." Taking this as verification, the Buddha-virtues are originally possessed, a meaning that is not false. This is a single-aspect statement; if distinguished within it, there is also the sense of generation. Such is the general aspect. Discussing them specifically: through the causal conditions of giving lamps and clean items, one obtains the flesh eye; through the power of the causal conditions of observing precepts and dhyāna, one obtains the divine eye; through the causal condition of observing precepts, one obtains the retributive divine eye in the desire realm; through the causal condition of dhyāna, one obtains all divine eyes in the form realm and above; through the causal conditions of cultivating immeasurable pure wisdom, one obtains the remaining three eyes. Furthermore, the treatise states: "By cultivating immeasurable merit and wisdom, one obtains the remaining three eyes."
