Next, the second section: distinguishing them according to the five eyes. As for the five eyes, as distinguished above: 1. The fleshly eye; 2. The divine eye; 3. The wisdom eye; 4. The dharma eye; 5. The Buddha eye. Among the five, the fleshly eye takes material dharmas as its essential nature. The divine eye alone has a twofold aspect: first, taking material dharmas as its essential nature, it illuminates present physical forms; second, taking prajñā as its essential nature, it is said to know future affairs of death and rebirth. The remaining three take only knowledge as their essential nature. Such are the five eyes.
The ten powers possess the essential nature of the four eyes, excluding the fleshly eye. Among the ten powers, the first, [the knowledge of] what is possible and impossible, has a broad cognitive object, universally knowing the truth and falsity of all dharmas, and possesses the nature of the four eyes. The seventh, the power of paths leading to all destinations, is also like this: clearly knowing the destinations to be reached in the future is the divine eye; knowing the gates of the five pāramitās as the paths leading to destinations is the dharma eye; knowing emptiness and non-self as the path leading to destinations is the wisdom eye; and clearly knowing Buddha-nature and the tathāgatagarbha as the path leading to destinations is the Buddha eye. Within the power of karma, it possesses the nature of two eyes: seeing sentient beings producing bodily, vocal, and other karmas is the nature of the divine eye; seeing the arising of afflictions, volitions, and so forth is the nature of the dharma eye. The six powers of samādhi, faculties, aspirations, dispositions, past lives, and exhaustion of taints have the nature of the dharma eye. The power of the divine eye has the nature of the divine eye. Such are the five eyes (this concludes section two).
