20.64

次第二門辨定多少。問曰：相好為止有此？為更有乎？如《花嚴經．相海品》說「於前三十二相之處，一一各有無量無邊阿僧祇等相好功德。是諸相好名字各別，於十方界功德作業利益亦異。雖有是相，微妙難見，如梵天王頂上寶珠名因陀羅，一切諸天都無見者。又亦如彼如意珠王，是珠具有無量勢力，珠形可見，是珠力用不可得見。佛相如是，化身麁相，可以目覩；實德妙相，一切人天無能見者，唯大菩薩知見少分，佛乃窮了。但為化度聲聞凡夫故，但現說三十二相八十種好。」問曰：經說如來胸中有一金剛萬字之相，名曰無比。何故向前三十二中不列其名？此乃眾多相海所攝，故於三十二中不列。多少如是（此二門竟）。

Next is the second gate, determining the quantity. Question: "Are the marks and signs limited only to these, or are there more?" As stated in the "Ocean of Marks" chapter of the *Avataṃsaka Sūtra*: "At each of the places of the aforementioned thirty-two marks, each possesses immeasurable, boundless, asaṃkhyeya marks, signs, and virtues. These various marks and signs have individual names, and their virtues, actions, and benefits across the realms of the ten directions are also diverse. Although there are these marks, they are subtle and difficult to see, like the jewel named Indra atop the head of the Brahma King, which none of the gods can see at all. Furthermore, it is also like the wish-fulfilling jewel king: this jewel possesses immeasurable power, and while the jewel's form can be seen, the jewel's potency and function cannot be seen. The Buddha's marks are like this: the coarse marks of the transformation body can be witnessed with one's eyes; the subtle marks of true virtue cannot be seen by any humans or devas; only great bodhisattvas perceive a small portion of them, and only the Buddha completely fathoms them. It is solely for the sake of converting and liberating śrāvakas and ordinary beings that the thirty-two marks and eighty minor signs are manifested and spoken of." Question: "The scriptures say that in the Tathāgata's chest there is a vajra svastika mark named 'incomparable.' Why is its name not enumerated among the thirty-two above?" This is subsumed within the vast ocean of marks, and therefore it is not enumerated among the thirty-two. The quantity is as such (this completes two gates).
