In the third section, distinction is made in relation to the effects. The effects are divided into five: first, the sovereign effect (adhipati-phala); second, the dependent effect (niṣyanda-phala); third, the retributive effect (vipāka-phala); fourth, the anthropomorphic effect (puruṣakāra-phala); and fifth, the effect of disconnection (visaṃyoga-phala). As for the sovereign effect: for instance, that eye-consciousness is produced with the eye-faculty as its dominant condition, and therefore in relation to the eye-faculty it is a sovereign effect. This is likewise the case for mental consciousness up to the mind-faculty. As for the dependent effect: arising from the earlier to produce the later, emerging mutually within the same class, is called a dependent effect. As for the retributive effect: good and bad karma obtaining suffering and pleasant retributions is called a retributive effect. As for the anthropomorphic effect: what is accomplished and brought to pass in the present time is called an anthropomorphic effect; the *Bodhisattvabhūmi* calls this the 'puruṣakāra-phala' (effect of a person's effort). As for the effect of disconnection: in the *Saṃyuktābhidharmahṛdaya*, the unconditioned attained when the mundane pure wisdom and the anāsrava path sever the afflictions is called an effect of disconnection. In the *Bodhisattvabhūmi*, it is explained that mundane wisdom eradicates the afflictions, but that is not ultimate and is not an effect of disconnection; only the locus where anāsrava severs the fetters is taken as disconnection. Among these five effects, an efficient cause obtains a sovereign effect. Causes of equal status and universal causes produce within the same class, obtaining that dependent effect. A retributive cause obtains that retributive effect. Associated and coexistent causes obtain an anthropomorphic effect. The counteractive path within the efficient cause obtains the effect of disconnection.
