In the fourth section, they are differentiated by proceeding through dharmas. There are seven kinds of dharmas: first, retributive dharmas; second, unwholesome [dharmas]; third, defiled neutral [dharmas]; fourth, pure neutral [dharmas] such as deportment; fifth, all sāsrava wholesome dharmas; sixth, all anāsrava wholesome dharmas other than the first moment of the anāsrava path; seventh, the dharma of the first moment of anāsrava. These seven kinds are subsumed into four stages. The first single category constitutes the first stage; the next two categories constitute the second stage; the next three categories constitute the third stage; and the last single category constitutes the fourth stage. In the first stage, there is an essential division into two: first, mental dharmas; second, non-mental dharmas. Those mental dharmas are produced from five causes, excluding the universal cause because retributive dharmas are not afflictions. Non-mental dharmas are produced from four causes: the meaning of excluding the universal cause is analogous to the previous explanation; the associated cause is excluded because they are non-mental dharmas. In the second stage, there are also mental dharmas and non-mental dharmas. Those mental dharmas are produced from five causes, excluding the retributive cause because they are not retributive dharmas. Non-mental dharmas are produced from four causes, excluding the retributive cause because they are not retributive dharmas, and excluding the associated cause because they are non-mental dharmas. In the third stage, there are also mental dharmas and non-mental dharmas. Those mental dharmas are produced from four causes, excluding the retributive cause because they are not retributive dharmas, and also excluding the universal cause because they are not afflictions. Non-mental dharmas are produced from three causes, excluding the retributive cause and excluding the universal cause—the meaning being the same as the previous explanation—and excluding the associated cause because they are non-mental dharmas. In the fourth stage, there are also mental dharmas and non-mental dharmas. Those mental dharmas are produced from three causes, excluding the retributive cause because they are not retributive; also excluding the universal cause because they are not afflictions; and excluding the self-cause because the initial anāsrava has no self-cause. Non-mental dharmas are produced from two causes: namely, the operative cause and the co-existent cause. No single dharma is produced from a single cause.
