Next, discerning dependence and support by contrasting root and branch within the consciousness characterized by the conjunction of the true and the deluded. The true unites with ignorance to jointly form the root consciousness. Based on the root, they jointly give rise to the ādāna consciousness; based on the root, they jointly give rise to the six kinds of arising consciousnesses. Within this division, the root consciousness is the root, and the remaining two are branches. The branches arising dependent on the root is termed 'dependence'; the root being able to support the branches in an uninterrupted continuous flow is termed 'support.' The supporter is like water, and the dependents are like waves. Question: Within the branches, since the ādāna consciousness jointly gives rise to the six consciousnesses, can there be the meaning of mutual dependence and support? Explanation: There cannot. In this division, the six consciousnesses arise directly from the root consciousness. The root consciousness transforms into them, and their essence is the root consciousness; therefore, with respect to the root consciousness, dependence and support are taught. It is not that the ādāna transforms into the six consciousnesses, nor is the essence of the six consciousnesses the ādāna consciousness; therefore, with respect to the ādāna, dependence and support are not taught. Just as in a dream a person's seeing, hearing, perceiving, and knowing arise from the sleeping mind, not from the mind that grasps an 'I' in the dream. If one speaks in terms of conditioning causes, it is also without flaw to speak of dependence and support. What is the meaning of this? Because the ādāna mind grasps an 'I,' it perfumes the root consciousness so that it does not see the reality of dharmas and does not realize nirvāṇa, transforming and giving rise to the six consciousnesses and the six sense faculties and objects; apart from it, they do not exist. Therefore the sūtra states: 'Because of grasping to an "I," one receives a body in the world; apart from the "I," it does not exist.' Following from this meaning, dependence and support may be spoken of. Dependence and support are thus (this completes the second section).
