Next, to determine their identity and difference: What difference is there between these three proclivities and the three obscurations of skin, flesh, and bone? The explanation is: The three proclivities are afflictive obscurations (kleśāvaraṇa), whereas those three obscurations are cognitive obscurations (jñeyāvaraṇa). Therefore, in that *Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra*, the three proclivities are expounded in terms of afflictive obscurations, and the three faults are expounded in terms of cognitive obscurations. The three faults are precisely what are subsumed under the cognitive obscurations of skin, flesh, and bone in the *Bodhisattvabhūmi-śāstra*. Affliction is the delusion of the four entrenchments, while cognitive obscuration is the entrenchment of ignorance. The doctrine of the three proclivities is briefly distinguished as such.
