First, listing the names and explaining their characteristics. The meaning of the six stains: as explained in the *Abhidharma*, they are harm, enmity, deception, haughtiness, flattery, and anguish. The intent to harm and injure sentient beings is called 'harm'. Harboring resentment without letting go is termed 'enmity'. Deceit is called 'deception'. Exalting oneself is called 'haughtiness'. Devious crookedness is termed 'flattery'. Burning worry is called 'anguish'. These six can all defile the pure mind, and are therefore called 'stains'. (This completes the first gate.)
