In the second section, there are four distinctions: (1) Explaining how the eight false conceptualizations produce three matters; (2) Explaining how the eight false conceptualizations cause one another to arise; (3) Explaining how the three matters alone cause one another to arise; (4) Explaining the causal arising of the eight false conceptualizations and three matters combined in relation to all afflictions, karmas, and sufferings. First, regarding the eight false conceptualizations producing the three matters: as stated in the treatise, "Regarding the three matters: first is the matter of falsehood, which refers to the objective realms of false conceptualization produced by the mind; because these realms are not real, they are called false. Second is the matter of views and conceit of 'I': the inverted mind conceives a self in the body, grasping the self with distinct clarity, which is called views. In this view of a self, there is a heavy knot on the object, unlike the false conceptualization of self among the eight. Grasping a self to oppress other beings is called the conceit of 'I.' Third is the matter of lust, malice, and ignorance: contaminating attachment to agreeable objects is called lust; wrath and anger at disagreeable objects is called malice; failure to understand neutral objects is designated as ignorance." The three matters are such. How do the eight false conceptualizations produce these three matters? As stated in the treatise, the first three false conceptualizations produce the matter of falsehood. Hence the treatise says: "Intrinsic nature, differentiation, and appropriation-accumulation—these three false conceptualizations are the locus of falsehood, and the conditional matters of falsehood arise from them, just as the objects of a dream arise dependent on the dreaming mind. The next two false conceptualizations produce the matter of views and conceit: relying on the subtle minds of self and belonging to self, they give rise to the coarse view of individuality and the conceit of 'I.' The last three false conceptualizations give rise to lust, malice, and ignorance: pleasant recollection produces lust; unpleasant recollection produces malice; and that which is contrary to both produces ignorance." (This concludes the first section.)
