Next, their characteristics are distinguished according to the three natures. The 'three natures' refer to wholesome, unwholesome, and indeterminate karma. Manifest karma of the desire realm encompasses all three natures. Manifest karma of the form realm is solely wholesome or indeterminate, and does not encompass the unwholesome. If one speaks of an unwholesome karma of the desire realm being initiated by borrowing [higher form], it can be unwholesome; in Abhidharma doctrine, there is no initiated borrowing at all, because realms and grounds are severed. Unmanifest [karma] of the desire realm is solely wholesome or unwholesome, and does not encompass the indeterminate, because the indeterminate is weak and cannot produce unmanifest karma. Unmanifest [karma] of the form realm is solely wholesome karma. If one speaks of an unwholesome karma of the lower realm being initiated by borrowing, it can be unwholesome. Unmanifest [karma] of the formless realm is the same as that of the form realm. Neither-manifest-nor-unmanifest [karma] of the desire realm extends across all three natures. When discussing neither-manifest-nor-unmanifest [karma] of the form realm within that realm, it is solely wholesome or indeterminate; if one speaks of an unwholesome karma of the desire realm being initiated by borrowing, it can be unwholesome. Neither-manifest-nor-unmanifest [karma] of the formless realm is the same as that of the form realm. Untainted karma is restricted solely to the wholesome. (This concludes the second section.)
