Next, distinguishing their antidotes according to the four wheels. What are the four wheels? As the Tattvasiddhi says: 1. Dwelling in a good place, meaning to be born in a central country (madhyadeśa). 2. Relying on a good person, meaning to encounter the era of a Buddha. 3. Personally generating correct aspirations, meaning to be endowed with right view. 4. Having planted wholesome roots in the past, meaning to have all faculties complete in the present. These four exist only among gods and humans, so the treatise calls them the four wheels of gods and humans. As for 'wheels', it is named by metaphor: because they can crush the eight difficulties and give rise to the untainted Dharma-wheel of the noble path, they are called wheels. Such are the four wheels. What are the characteristics of their antidotes? As explained in the treatise: First, dwelling in a good place can crush five difficulties, namely the three bad destinies, long life, and Uttarakuru, because being born and dwelling in a central country among humans or gods, one is free from these five. Relying on a good person keeps one far removed from the difficulty of before or after a Buddha, because encountering the era of a Buddha removes this difficulty. Personally generating correct aspirations keeps one far removed from the difficulty of worldly knowledge and dialectical eloquence, because by seeking correctly one is free from that false difficulty. Having planted wholesome roots in the past keeps one far removed from the difficulty of blindness, deafness, muteness, and lameness, because possessing all faculties removes that difficulty. Such are the eight difficulties.
