In the fifth gate, distinction is made in correlation to the aggregates. 'Aggregates' refers to the five aggregates: the one form aggregate is divided to constitute ten āyatanas and a small fraction [of another]. The five faculties and five objects are those ten āyatanas. As for 'a small fraction': according to the Abhidharma, the wholesome and unwholesome unmanifest within the dharma āyatana is this form aggregate; according to the Tattvasiddhi, the past and future five objects as well as conventionally designated forms such as the four great elements within the dharma āyatana are this form aggregate; hence it is called a small fraction. Among the other four aggregates: according to the Abhidharma, the consciousness aggregate is taken separately to constitute the mind āyatana, while conception, sensation, and formations are subsumed under the dharma āyatana. According to the Tattvasiddhi, discussed generally according to meaning, the meaning of all four minds being able to generate subsequent [moments] is entirely the mind āyatana, while the meaning of all consciousnesses being generated from previous [moments] entirely belongs to the dharma āyatana. If the five consciousnesses are differentiated, the mind that ceases in immediate succession prior to the five consciousnesses is the dharma āyatana, and the rest are all the mind āyatana, because they are all subsumed under the general designation of the mind faculty. If correlated with that specific name of mental consciousness, the mind at the end of formations that generates mental consciousness is the mind āyatana, and the rest are all the dharma āyatana.
