Next, the sixth section explains the meaning of perfuming. Herein there are two [parts]: first, discerning perfuming within the consciousnesses of distinct characteristics of the true and the deluded; second, discussing perfuming within the consciousness characterized by the conjunction of the true and the deluded. The former is subdivided into three: first, determining the entities of the dharmas of perfuming; second, an overall explanation of the meaning of perfuming; third, extensively revealing the aspects of perfuming. As for the dharmas of perfuming, the Awakening of Faith states that there are four kinds: first, the perfuming of pure dharmas, namely tathatā; second, the perfuming of the cause of defilement, namely ignorance; third, the perfuming of the deluded mind, namely the karmic consciousness—within the seventh consciousness, from the karmic consciousness up through the continuous consciousness, all are collectively named the karmic consciousness; fourth, the perfuming of deluded objects, namely the false objects produced by the mind of deluded conceptualization. These four are still what the Bodhisattvabhūmi-śāstra speaks of: 'Suchness is as it truly is; ordinary fools, not knowing it, give rise to the eight deluded conceptualizations and produce two kinds of entities.' The perfuming of tathatā is like that 'as it truly is'; ignorance is like those 'ordinary fools not knowing'; the deluded mind is like the 'giving rise to the eight deluded conceptualizations'; and deluded objects are like the initial false entities among the 'producing three entities.' Question: For what reason are the phenomenal consciousness and phenomenal faculties and objects not spoken of as perfuming? Because this branch arises from perfuming, it is not spoken of [as perfuming] (this completes the first section).
