Question: Why are these two taught? Explanation: Sentient beings themselves consider what they understand to be real; the noble ones designate it, saying: 'It is not real, it is false and illusory.' Furthermore, there are sentient beings who consider what they understand to be supreme and unsurpassed; the noble ones designate it, saying: 'What you understand is not supreme; it is merely what worldly people understand.' For this reason, the Buddha spoke of the worldly and spoke of the conventional. The conventional has insubstantiality and custom; the worldly has succession and differentiation. These four names have broad and narrow, shared and distinct. What are they? Custom and succession are distinct; insubstantiality and differentiation are shared. Distinct is narrow; shared is broad.
