Question: Why explain only these names? Explanation: These four names possess shared and distinct, broad and narrow. The shared, distinct, broad, and narrow encompass everything completely; therefore, only these four names are explained. The worldly customs of sentient beings, lands, and so forth are merely customary phenomena and are exclusively impermanent; therefore, they are narrow. Insubstantiality, however, is broad: insubstantiality is simply provisional existence, clarifying that all phenomena are provisional, and that all worlds, up to and including what is taught and manifested by the Buddhas and bodhisattvas, are provisional; therefore, it is broad. Succession and differentiation are also like this. Succession is merely the impermanent, fluctuating phenomena, hence it is narrow; differentiation, however, extends to both the permanent and impermanent, emptiness and existence—the differentiation of permanent and impermanent, emptiness and existence. Thus the "Chapter on the Mother of the Buddha" says: "It demonstrates the realm of the five aggregates, the realm of the eighteen elements, the realm of the ten powers, and the realm of all-aspect omniscience." 'World' (realm) is precisely differentiation; therefore, differentiation is broad.
