Question: What is the realm of noble ones? Answer: All phenomena are empty in nature, and noble ones thoroughly comprehend this. For noble ones, emptiness is real, so emptiness is called truth to noble ones; noble ones also thoroughly comprehend that the existence perceived by inverted ordinary people is false and unreal, so existence is not truth to noble ones. That ordinary people can only compare to ordinary people and cannot compare to noble ones means that ordinary people only know the inverted realm of ordinary people; this realm is real to ordinary people, so the conventional is truth to ordinary people. Ordinary people cannot know that all phenomena of the noble ones are empty in nature, so the ultimate cannot be [known by them as] not truth. If an ordinary person were able to comprehend the nature of emptiness, they would then become a noble one, and the ultimate would again not be not truth. The ultimate has two senses in which it cannot be not truth: first, ordinary people do not know the emptiness of noble ones at all, so the ultimate cannot be not truth; second, if they know the emptiness of noble ones, they immediately become noble ones and emptiness becomes ultimate truth, so again it cannot be not truth. Broadly speaking, the conventional is known by ordinary people and also known by noble ones; therefore the conventional is both truth and not truth. The ultimate is only known by noble ones and cannot be known by ordinary people; therefore the ultimate is only truth and cannot be not truth.
