"Over ninety-one kalpas, the bodhisattva cultivated virtue, studied the mind of the buddhas, mastered the practices of the ten stages, and reached the position of one bound to one more birth. Later he was born in the fourth heaven, Tuṣita, as a teacher to all the devas, his merit accomplished, his aspiration fulfilled, his spiritual wisdom boundless. When the destined time arrived for him to descend and become a buddha, he entrusted his birth to the kingdom of Kapilavastu in India. His royal father was named Śuddhodana, intelligent, discerning, benevolent, and virtuous; his consort was named Māyā, chaste, righteous, gentle, and good. Kapilavastu is the center of the three thousand suns and moons and twelve thousand heavens and earths. The spiritual majesty of a buddha is supremely venerable and supremely weighty; he cannot be born in a borderland, for the earth would tilt and slant; thus he dwells in the center. Converting throughout the ten directions, all the buddhas of antiquity who arose came forth here.
