"The bodhisattva served Dīpaṃkara until his Nirvāṇa. Upholding the precepts and protecting the Dharma, when his lifespan ended he was born in the first heaven as a Cāturmahārājika king. Having exhausted his heavenly lifespan, he descended to be born among humans as a flying wheel-turning holy king, an emperor—the seven treasures arrived of themselves: first, the wheel-treasure; second, the jewel-treasure; third, the dark blue horse-treasure with red mane and tail; fourth, the white elephant-treasure with red mane and tail; fifth, the woman-treasure; sixth, the wise-minister treasure; seventh, the holy-leader treasure—ruling for eighty-four thousand years. When his lifespan ended, he ascended to be born in the second heaven, Trāyastriṃśa, as Śakra, Lord of the Devas. When that lifespan was exhausted, he ascended again to the seventh heaven, Brahmaloka, as Brahmā King. In this way, ascending as lord of devas and descending as holy sovereign, thirty-six times each, round and round he cycled. As for his transformations, he manifested according to the times: sometimes as a sage emperor, sometimes as the foremost scholar, a state preceptor, or a practitioner of the Way; the places where he manifested and transformed cannot be fully recorded.
