1.32

"Having traveled several tens of li, he met two hunters. The Prince thought to himself: 'I have already abandoned my home to dwell in these mountains and marshes; I should not, like an ordinary person, wear precious garments, displaying an air of desire.' Thereupon he took off the precious robe from his body and exchanged it with a hunter for a deerskin garment. Coming forward, he dismounted from the horse and sent Chandaka back. Chandaka knelt upright and said: 'Now that I have followed the Great Deva, I cannot return alone.' The Prince said: 'You may go straight back. Report to the Great King on high and take leave of my wife. I now seek the Great Way of the unconditioned; do not worry about me.' He then took off his jeweled crown and the clothes he wore, giving them all to Chandaka. Thereupon the white horse bent its knees and licked his feet, its tears falling like linked pearls. Chandaka wept with grief, crying as he followed the road. Looking back at the Prince, he saw he was already clad in the deerskin garment, changed in attire, and departing."
