"Presently the Buddha arrived. The king, ministers, and people all welcomed and paid homage to him, each scattering renowned flowers, and all the flowers fell to the ground. When the bodhisattva gained sight of the Buddha, he scattered the five stalks of flowers, and they all suspended in mid-air, directly above the Buddha as if rooted there, none falling to the ground. Afterward, he scattered the two flowers, and they also lodged on the Buddha's two shoulders. The Buddha, knowing his utmost intent, praised the bodhisattva, saying: 'For countless kalpas, what you have learned has been pure. Subduing your mind and renouncing your life, relinquishing desire and preserving emptiness, neither arising nor ceasing, with unattached compassion you have accumulated virtues and practiced vows; today you have attained it.' He then conferred a prediction upon him, saying: 'Ninety-one kalpas after this, the kalpa will be named Bhadra ["Worthy"], and you shall become a buddha named Śākyamuni (in the language of India, "Śākya" means capable, and "muni" means sage; its meaning is the Capable Sage).'
