"The Buddha again moved closer to Kāśyapa, sitting beneath a tree. In the first part of the night, the Four Heavenly Kings all descended to listen to the Buddha preach the scriptures. The light and radiance of the four kings were as bright as a blazing fire. Kāśyapa arose at night to make astrological observations, and saw four fires beside the Buddha. The next morning he went to ask: ‘Does the Great Man of the Way also serve fire?’ The Buddha said: ‘I do not serve fire.’ He asked: ‘Last night there were four fires here, why was that?’ The Buddha said: ‘Last night the Four Heavenly Kings came down to listen to the scriptures; it was their light.’ Kāśyapa thought to himself: ‘This great śramaṇa is extremely miraculous. Even so, he has still not attained the Way, and hence is not equal to my attainment of arhatship!’
