"On the second day the Buddha stayed beneath the tree, Śakra came down again at night to hear the Buddha preach the scripture. Śakra's radiance and aura were even vastly brighter. Kāśyapa arose at night to observe the signs, and saw by the Buddha's side a fiery light twice as bright as the four fires of the night before. He thought to himself: 'This great śramaṇa must also be performing fire sacrifices.' The next morning he went again and asked: 'Is the Great Man of the Way perhaps performing fire sacrifices?' The Buddha said: 'No. Yesterday Śakra came down to hear the scripture; it was merely his light.' Kāśyapa thought: 'This great śramaṇa is indeed spiritually wondrous. Even so, he has not attained the Way, and is not equal to me, who have attained the status of an arhat!'
