"At that time, Kāśyapa's five hundred disciples were just then splitting firewood together. Each raised an axe, but none of the axes could be brought down. In great alarm, they reported this to their master. Their master said: 'This was done by that great śramaṇa.' He immediately went and asked the Buddha: 'My disciples were just now splitting firewood together, and all their axes were raised and could not be brought down.' The Buddha said: 'You may go; the axes will come down.' The axes immediately came down. After coming down, the axes all stuck fast in the firewood, and when they tried to lift them, they could not be lifted. He went again and reported to the Buddha: 'Now that the axes have just come down, they cannot be lifted again.' The Buddha said: 'You may go; I shall now cause the axes to be lifted.' They were immediately lifted and could be used. Kāśyapa thought again: 'Although this great śramaṇa is spiritual, he is still not equal to my Way, which is real!'
