"At that time, the waters of the Nairañjanā were flowing broad and swift. By means of his natural supernatural powers, the Buddha blocked the waters and made them stop, causing them to part and rise up higher than a person's head, and raising dust from the riverbed as the Buddha walked within it. Fearing that the Buddha had been swept away by the waters, Kāśyapa took a boat together with his disciples to search for the Buddha. Kāśyapa saw the waters partitioned off and dust rising in the middle, with the Buddha walking among it. Kāśyapa called out, saying: 'Is the Great Man of the Way still alive?' The Buddha said: 'Indeed, I am alive.' He further asked the Buddha: 'Do you wish to board the boat, or not?' The Buddha said: 'Very well.' The Buddha thought: 'I should now display a supernatural feat to subdue this man's mind.' He immediately entered from within the water, penetrating through the bottom of the boat without leaving any trace of a hole. Kāśyapa thought again: 'This great śramaṇa is certainly spiritual, yet he is not equal to me, who have already attained the status of an arhat!'
