This principle is subtle and profound; it can only be understood through spiritual illumination to wondrously recognize the Buddha's intent; one must not merely follow consciousness and rely on words to determine the purport. 'Factual events' refers to emotional consciousness and verbal teachings. In the *Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra*, Mahāmati raised doubts, and the Buddha also harmonized and explained them. Therefore, among the four reliances of the Dharma, one is instructed only to rely on the meaning and not on the letter, to rely on wisdom and not on consciousness. Master Daosheng inverted the conventional teachings to speak of principle, a rare voice throughout the ages; Master Sengzhao disdained factual events and valued the spirit, a standard model for a hundred generations. Yet this is only for those of superior wisdom; it is not possible for those of middling or lower capacity.
