The first two lines clarify that the myriad things all possess neither existence nor non-existence. The next four lines follow and show the negation of both to enter the middle way. The next four lines also follow the preceding, sequentially not falling into annihilationism or eternalism. The last two lines merely complete the preceding four lines. Because it is not truly existent, if existent it is not identical with the true; because it does not cut off into vacuity, if non-existent it does not level traces. The word "if" runs through this, meaning that it is not that things and traces are dissected and destroyed and only then is it non-existent. "Level" also means to cut down and weed out.
