This does not differ in major purport from the beginning of the treatise, only the phrasing is slightly altered. Names arise from sentiment; how could like and dislike be fixed? Sometimes multiple names are established for a single thing, and sometimes a single name designates multiple things. Although the thing responds to the name, it also lacks the real principle corresponding to the name, as when using "earth dragon" [earthworm] or "wood thief" [horsetail] to name medicinal herbs. Moreover, although names designate things, they also lack the real efficacy of obtaining things, just as talking of water does not moisten the lips, and speaking of filth does not soil the mouth. One should know that names are provisional designations and things are illusory transformations; they merely conform to worldly convention and do not enter dharmatā.
