First, one can definitively determine the sage mind according to the realms of the two truths. If one says the mind is one, supposing that when upāya-jñāna responds in activity and observes things, does it solely illuminate the emptiness and animitta of things? Or does it illuminate conventional activity with characteristics? From 'If it beholds' onward, he reveals the contradiction. If it observes characteristics and adapts to encounters, it definitely loses animitta. If it only sees animitta, it conversely loses adapting to encounters. If the sage mind is only one, it definitely must gain one and lose the other; if one makes it attain both truths, in principle upāya and tattva must be two distinct things.
