Regarding the "two statements," Master Yao said: "'Marvelously consummated and silently matching' is one statement; 'empty, tranquil, and sensing in isolation' is one statement." Master [Jing]yuan refers to upāya and tattva as the two statements; the meaning and intention are very similar, and we now follow it. The first two lines directly take the sage mind's upāya-jñāna and tattva-jñāna as non-different. The latter two lines implicitly reprove the seeking of difference. "Traces" refers to the distinct traces of the two knowledges illuminating principle and reaching phenomena; it is only our human worldly distinctions that make them different, not that upāya and tattva in the sage mind are dual and distinct. Although "oneself" is a general designation, here it applies to Lord Liu.
