Wishing to clarify the double negation of noble knowledge, it first shows the deluded thoughts of being and non-being as the causes for the double negation below. In the first two lines, a shadow arises from a form, and an echo resounds from a sound. This means that when the mind conditions being and non-being, the characteristics of being and non-being are the shadow and echo of the mind; the mind is like the form and the sound. The lines from "Words..." onward mean that the mind conditions the two realms of being and non-being, and further produces words and forms. Once words and forms are established, within them the mind calculates being and calculates non-being, chasing, climbing, and deliberating. This is identical to the Awakening of Faith saying, "Due to the mind manifesting realms, knowledge again discriminates, continuously grasping," and so forth. The Mahāyāna-viṃśikā summarizes: "Like a person painting a rākṣasa, who paints it himself and then fears it himself."
