The Dīrghāgama and other texts state: 'When the Tathāgata was heading toward the city of Kuśīnagara, his back pained him along the way, and he bade his disciples fold a saṅghāṭī fourfold for him to rest beneath a tree,' and so forth. 'Heavenly coffin' refers to the golden coffin; it was made in accordance with the ancient funerary rites for a sacred cakravartin, hence it is called a heavenly coffin. The intended meaning is: body and mind are not existent [in themselves]; they arise spontaneously from stimulation. Neither can gain augment them, nor can loss diminish them. How could it be like the view of the Hīnayāna—that his back pained him midway on the road, his life ended in the twin groves, his spiritual wisdom was extinguished in the heavenly coffin, and his sacred form was turned to ashes in the cremation pyre?
