From "he can ultimately" downward, it continues from what precedes to clarify. "Profound root" is a metaphor for the true; "uproot" is a metaphor for realization. "Before the beginning" has two meanings: first, "before" means non-being; because principle is without beginning, when wisdom first accords with it, it does not illuminate a newly present existence. Second, although wisdom reaches the ultimate truth, it has never yet had the mark of illuminating; as said before, "empty mind," etc. "Manifold movements" refers to the mundane. At the time of provisional response, originally there is no mark of responding, hence it is said "quiet the mind." The latter two clauses sequentially complete the marklessness of the two wisdoms above. "Spontaneity": responding after being stimulated, without exerting effort. The Awakening of Faith says: "Spontaneously possessing inconceivable karma, able to appear throughout the ten directions to benefit sentient beings."
