3.41

十演之一也。開，張也。宗，本也。初略張宗本令識大義，後方折演委細巧示，令人深入，倣於《孝經》命章云爾。後之九演，宗此演此。

This is the first of the ten expositions. “To open” means to lay out. “Fundamental tenet” means the basis. At first, it briefly sets forth the fundamental basis so that readers grasp the main principle; later, it conducts refutations and expositions with skillful detail so that people may enter deeply, modeled upon the naming of chapters in the *Classic of Filial Piety*. The subsequent nine expositions take this as their fundamental tenet and expound upon it.
