Our scripture in chapter twenty-two says: "The Tathāgata is neither a sentient being nor not a sentient being, because the Tathāgata is identical to nirvāṇa." This can be cited for its meaning. Chapter twenty-nine says: "Sentient beings and Buddha-nature are neither one nor two," and so forth. Next it cites the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa, which is from the first fascicle, "Chapter on the Bodhisattvas," where the phrasing is also slightly different. There it says: "All Buddhas know that all sentient beings are ultimately quiescent and extinct, which is the mark of nirvāṇa," and so forth.
