Various sūtras and treatises often clarify the four tetralemmas, namely: existent, non-existent, both existent and non-existent, and neither existent nor non-existent. Expressing virtues based on dharmas does not go beyond these four. Furthermore, in terms of refuting attachments and eliminating slanders, there are also four propositions, namely: not existent, not non-existent, not neither-existent-nor-non-existent, and not both-existent-and-non-existent. What is cited now are the fourth of the former [tetralemma] and the first two propositions of the latter. The reason for specifically citing these to clarify them is to eliminate the two views, to block [extremes] and reveal the Middle Way, and to cause the mind to be without abiding; this serves as the main doctrine for the Buzhenkong lun below.
