The first two lines also explain how the name is acquired: because it transforms sentient beings, it is named expedient means. The latter two lines state that it transforms yet is not defiled; this again is because great wisdom guides compassion so that it is not defiled by dust, distinguishing it from ordinary persons. The Vimalakīrtinirdeśa says: "Expedient means without wisdom is bondage; expedient means with wisdom is liberation." This is because expedient means without wisdom falls into the net of craving and views and is submerged in the forest of marks. "Dust" refers to the dusty objects of the five desires; "encumbrances" refers to the faults and afflictions of birth-and-death.
