The Mahāyāna of principle refers to the principle of tathatā. When practices such as the six pāramitās ride upon this principle of tathatā, they are capable of reaching their destination, and so it is called the Great Vehicle. Therefore Asvabhāva said: "Or, it rides upon the great nature, hence it is called the Great Vehicle." This refers solely to the fundamental. The Śrīmālādevī-sūtra says: "The noble truths are not the truths of the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, nor are they the merits of the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas." The Saddharmapuṇḍarīkôpadeśa says: "As for mindfulness and contemplation: śrāvakas contemplate the selflessness of persons; bodhisattvas contemplate the two selflessnesses of tathatā," and so forth. The Nirvāṇa Sūtra also says: "Śrāvakas have suffering and have truths, but they lack reality; bodhisattvas possess them completely." Therefore, the expedient principle of the four truths of the Mahāyāna and so on are all the Mahāyāna of principle.
