隨煩惱性，雖具種姓，由四因緣，不能速證無上菩提。何等為四？謂諸菩薩先未值遇諸佛菩薩真善知識為說菩提無顛倒道，是名第一因。又諸菩薩雖遇善友為說正道，而顛倒執，於所正學中顛倒修學，名第二因。又諸菩薩雖遇善友為說正道能正修學，而於加行方便慢緩，不能勇猛熾然精進，名第三因。又諸菩薩雖遇善友為說正道加行勇猛，善根未熟，資糧未圓，未長時修菩提分法，名第四因。

Due to the nature of upakleśas, even if possessing the gotra, due to four causes and conditions, one cannot swiftly realize unsurpassed bodhi. What are the four? First, bodhisattvas have not previously encountered the true kalyāṇamitras among the buddhas and bodhisattvas to explain the non-inverted path of bodhi to them; this is called the first cause. Second, although encountering a good friend who explains the right path, bodhisattvas grasp it invertedly and practice invertedly within what is rightly to be trained; this is called the second cause. Third, although encountering a good friend who explains the right path and being able to train correctly, they are lax and negligent in prayoga and upāya, unable to practice bold and blazing vīrya; this is called the third cause. Fourth, although encountering a good friend who explains the right path and being bold in prayoga, their wholesome roots are not yet ripe, their sambhāra is not yet complete, and they have not cultivated the bodhipakṣadharmas for a long time; this is called the fourth cause.
