As for the characteristic marks of the gotra of śīla: bodhisattvas by their very nature accomplish [only] mild grades of unwholesome bodily, verbal, and mental karma, and are not extremely violent or evil. Toward sentient beings, they do not cause extreme harm or affliction. Although doing evil deeds, they are able to repent swiftly. They constantly practice shame and remorse, and do not generate pleasure [in evil]. They do not harm or afflict sentient beings with weapons or the like; their nature is constantly loving and kind. Toward those worthy of respect, they bow down before them in person. They cultivate the karma of harmony and respect; they are alert and nimble, not foolish. They are skilled in accommodating the minds of others, always smiling first. With relaxed expressions and level gazes, they stay far from scowling. They speak first to inquire after others, and they recognize and repay kindness. When others come seeking straightforwardly, they do not turn them away with flattery. They seek wealth in accordance with Dharma, not through non-Dharma. They do not act precipitously or violently, but delight in cultivating merit. They even encourage others, not to mention doing so themselves. Hearing of others pressed by diverse sufferings, it affects them more than their own bodies. They fear even slight transgressions deeply, much less many transgressions. In everything in accord with Dharma they share common pursuits with others, but they do not follow along with non-Dharma; evil thoughts are not sustained, but abandoned as soon as they arise. They are virtuous, gentle, reverent, and speak the truth without deception; even toward their own servants they do not use harsh words, much less toward others. Such classes of things are called the characteristic marks of the gotra of śīla.
