Regarding making vows and undertaking aspirations, how does a bodhisattva set out toward bodhi, and through what karmic practices is bodhi accomplished? A bodhisattva who has aroused the mind, abiding on the stage of dry wisdom, must first firmly generate the right vows, gathering in all immeasurable sentient beings: 'Seeking unsurpassable bodhi, I shall rescue, protect, and deliver them without remainder, causing all to ultimately reach nirvāṇa without remainder.' Therefore, in initially arousing the mind, great compassion comes first; because of the compassionate mind, one can bring forth the increasingly supreme ten great right vows. What are the ten? First, I vow that the roots of goodness planted by me in previous lifetimes and in this present body be given to all, and that all together dedicate them toward unsurpassable bodhi, causing this vow of mine to increase from moment to moment, not to be forgotten life after life, and to be guarded by dhāraṇī. Second, I vow that having dedicated [them] toward great bodhi, by means of these roots of goodness, in all places of rebirth, I may always make offerings to all buddhas and never be born in a land without a buddha. Third, I vow that having gained rebirth in the buddha-lands, I may always draw near to them and attend at their side like a shadow following a form, not leaving the buddhas for even an instant. Fourth, I vow that having drawn near to the buddhas, as is suitable they expound the Dharma for me, and that I immediately attain and accomplish the bodhisattva's five supernatural knowledges. Fifth, I vow that having attained supernatural knowledges, I may immediately comprehend worldly convention and nominal designations, realize the ultimate truth, and obtain the wisdom of the true Dharma. Sixth, I vow that having obtained the wisdom of the true Dharma, with an untiring mind, I may expound the Dharma for sentient beings, instructing, guiding, benefiting, and gladdening them, causing all to attain understanding. Seventh, I vow that having brought all sentient beings to understanding, through the Buddha's spiritual power, I may travel everywhere to all worlds of the ten directions without remainder, make offerings to the buddhas, listen to and receive the true Dharma, and extensively gather in sentient beings. Eighth, I vow that having heard the true Dharma from the buddhas, I may immediately turn the pure wheel [of the Dharma] accordingly, so that all sentient beings in the worlds of the ten directions who hear my teaching or hear my name may immediately cast off all afflictions and arouse bodhicitta. Ninth, I vow that having caused all sentient beings to arouse bodhi, I may constantly accompany and protect them, eliminate what is unbeneficial, bestow immeasurable joy, give up body, life, and wealth, gather in sentient beings, and shoulder the true Dharma. Tenth, I vow that having become able to shoulder the true Dharma, though practicing the true Dharma, my mind engages in no practice, just as all bodhisattvas practice the true Dharma while having no practice and yet leaving no practice undone, not abandoning the right vows in order to transform sentient beings.
