Next, establishing resolute vows is maintained by five things: first, it can make the mind firm; second, it can subdue afflictions; third, it can prevent negligence; fourth, it destroys the five hindrances; fifth, it can diligently cultivate the six pāramitās. How does one establish the vows? If someone comes seeking various things, at that time I will give according to what I have, not even giving rise to a single thought of stinginess. If for the span of a finger-snap an evil thought should arise, or if through the causal condition of giving I should seek a pure reward, then I would be deceiving the immeasurable Buddhas of the worlds of the ten directions, and in future ages I would also definitely not achieve unexcelled bodhi. If I uphold the precepts, even unto losing my life, establishing a pure mind, I vow to have no regret. If I cultivate patience, even if injured or dismembered by others, I will constantly give rise to a mind of loving-kindness, vowing to bear no anger or resentment. If I cultivate vigor, though encountering cold, heat, rulers, bandits, water, fire, lions, tigers, wolves, or places without water and grain, I must be firm, vowing never to retreat or sink. If I cultivate dhyāna, though disturbed by external affairs and unable to gather the mind, I must bind my mindfulness to the object, vowing not to give rise even momentarily to illicit, distracted thoughts. If I cultivate wisdom, I will contemplate all dharmas in accordance with their real nature, following and upholding it, not giving rise to dualistic views regarding wholesome and unwholesome, conditioned and unconditioned, or saṃsāra and nirvāṇa. If my mind should have regret, anger, discouragement, or distracted thoughts, or give rise to dualistic views even for the span of a finger-snap, and seek a pure reward through precepts, patience, vigor, dhyāna, and wisdom, then I would be deceiving the immeasurable, boundless, asamphyeya present Buddhas of the worlds of the ten directions, and in the future I would not realize bodhi. The bodhisattva maintains the practice of the true Dharma with the ten great vows and restrains the negligent mind with the six great vows, and thus will definitely be able to diligently cultivate and amass the six pāramitās and achieve unexcelled bodhi.
