《十地經》云：菩薩作是思惟：一切眾生墮諸惡道，皆由不離十不善業道集因緣故。是故我當先住善法，亦令他人住於善法。何以故？若人自不行善、不具善行，為他說法令住善者，無有是處。
The Daśabhūmika Sūtra states: "The bodhisattva contemplates thus: 'Sentient beings all fall into the various miserable destinies because they do not separate from the causes and conditions collected through the ten unwholesome courses of action. Therefore, I should first abide in wholesome dharmas, and also cause others to abide in wholesome dharmas. Why is this? If one does not oneself practice good and is not endowed with good conduct, to preach the Dharma to others to cause them to abide in the good is impossible.'"
