3.100

戒九門者：一、自性門有四種，一從他正受、二善淨意樂、三犯已還淨、四深敬專念。無有違犯，由從他受，外觀愧故，善淨意樂。違犯內慚故，還淨專念。初無違犯，二因緣故。離諸惡作，初二為依，生慚愧故；由慚愧故，能護尸羅；由能護故，離諸惡作。又初二是法，後二是前二法所引。又初二第四能令不毀，犯已還淨令犯還出，具四功德，能利自他，利益安樂無量眾生，哀愍世間諸人天等故。

The nine portals of precepts (śīla): First, the portal of its intrinsic nature (svabhāva) has four kinds: first, receiving them correctly from another; second, wholesome and pure intention; third, restoration to purity after an offense; fourth, deep reverence and focused mindfulness. There is no transgression because, by receiving them from another, one has outward shame (trapā) toward others, and because of wholesome and pure intention. Due to inward shame (hrī) regarding offenses, one restores purity and maintains focused mindfulness. That there is initially no transgression is due to two causes: freedom from wrongdoings relies on the first two, which give rise to shame and modesty; through shame and modesty one can protect the precepts (śīla); and by being able to protect them, one is free from wrongdoings. Furthermore, the first two are the Dharma, while the latter two are induced by the former two dharmas. In addition, the first two and the fourth can prevent breach, while restoration to purity after an offense enables one to emerge from transgressions. Endowed with these four qualities, one can benefit oneself and others, benefiting and bringing peace and happiness to immeasurable sentient beings out of compassion for the humans, devas, and others of the world.
