Sixth, the precepts of all kinds (sarvākāraśīla), to state the essentials, has six kinds and seven kinds. The six kinds are: first, the precepts of dedication, because they are dedicated to great bodhi; second, broad precepts, because they broadly encompass all training rules (śikṣāpada); third, the precepts of the faultless place of joy, because they are free from indulgence in sensual pleasures and from self-mortification, the two extremes of practice; fourth, constant precepts, because one does not abandon them even to the end of one's life; fifth, firm precepts, because gain, honor, and root and secondary afflictions (upakleśa) do not subdue or rob them; sixth, the precepts corresponding to the ornaments of śīla, because they are endowed with all the ornaments of the precepts, as stated in the Śrāvakabhūmi. The seven kinds are: first, the precepts of cessation, because they are free from all killing and so forth; second, the precepts of active performance, because they gather all wholesomeness and benefit sentient beings; third, the precepts of protection, because they guard the precepts of cessation and active performance; fourth, the precepts whose ripening is the marks of a great person; fifth, the precepts whose ripening is the higher mind (adhisitta); sixth, the precepts whose ripening is a pleasant rebirth; seventh, the precepts whose ripening is benefiting sentient beings.
