3.31

次當為說三品心受戒。於十方諸佛所，有三品相現，或涼風、或妙香、或異聲、或光明等，種種相現。彼諸菩薩各各問佛，何因緣故有此相現？彼佛各答云：「於某方處索訶世界，在某處所，有某甲眾多菩薩，於某甲師所，說受菩薩戒，今證明所以有此三品相現。」彼彼菩薩咸生歡喜，各各皆言：「於如是等極惡處所，如此具足雜染煩惱惡業有情，能發如是極勝之心，受菩薩戒，甚為希有，深生憐愍，於汝等所，起同梵行心。」是故汝等宜應至心護持淨戒，不惜身命而勿毀犯。

Next, one should explain the three grades of mental state for receiving the precepts. In the presence of the Buddhas of the ten directions, three grades of signs appear: either a cool breeze, wondrous fragrance, extraordinary sounds, or light, various signs appear. Those bodhisattvas each ask their Buddhas: 'For what cause and condition do these signs appear?' Those Buddhas each reply: 'In such-and-such direction, in the Sahā world, at such-and-such place, there are many bodhisattvas named so-and-so who have declared their receiving of the bodhisattva precepts at the place of master so-and-so. It is because of now bearing witness that these three grades of signs have appeared.' All those bodhisattvas rejoice and each say: 'In such an extremely evil place, that sentient beings so fully possessed of defilements, afflictions, and bad karma are able to arouse such an extremely surpassing mind and receive the bodhisattva precepts is exceedingly rare! We deeply generate pity and give rise to the mind of sabrahmacārins toward you.' Therefore, you should protect and maintain the pure precepts with utmost sincerity, not begrudging physical life and never violating them."
