Second, giving of everything (sarvadāna) briefly has two kinds: first, giving of internal things; second, giving of external things. Giving only one's own body is called giving internal things. If, taking pity on sentient beings whose life depends on food, one eats repeatedly and vomits up the eaten food to give it, this is called giving mixed internal and external things. Giving all other things that ought to be given aside from those explained above is called giving only external things. If one knows that giving internal or external things would merely bring pleasure to those sentient beings without benefiting them, or would neither benefit nor bring them pleasure, one does not give it to them. Giving is the opposite of this. In full, there are immeasurable cases of what ought and ought not to be given, which can be understood by inference through reflection.
