The Sūtra of Yuye says: The Buddha told Yuye: 'A woman should not rely upon her upright beauty to be haughty and contemptuous toward her husband. What constitutes upright beauty? Dispensing with perverse manners and the eighty-four defilements, having a settled thought and single mind—this is upright beauty; it is not having a fair complexion or splendid hair and robes that constitutes upright beauty. In a woman's body there are ten evil things. What are the ten? First, when a woman is first born and falls to the ground, the parents are not pleased. Second, raising and nursing her offers no relish. Third, a woman's mind is constantly fearful of others. Fourth, parents are constantly worried over her marriage. Fifth, she must undergo separation from her parents while still alive. Sixth, she constantly fears her husband and watches his expression: if he is pleased she is immediately glad; if he is angry she is terrified. Seventh, pregnancy and childbirth are exceedingly difficult. Eighth, in youth a woman is restrained by her parents. Ninth, in midlife she is restricted by her husband. Tenth, in old age she is scolded by her children and grandchildren; from birth to death she never attains self-mastery. These are the ten evil things.'
