The Buddha told Yuye: 'In a wife serving her parents-in-law and husband, there are five goods and three evils. What are the five goods? First, as a wife, she should sleep late and rise early, comb her hair, arrange her clothing, wash her face clean of dirt, and when attending to tasks first inform her elders, her mind constantly respectful and compliant. If there are delicacies, she must not eat them first. Second, when her husband scolds her, she must not harbour resentment. Third, she must single-mindedly guard [devotion to] her husband and must not think of perverse lust. Fourth, she must constantly wish that her husband enjoys long life. Fifth, when her husband goes abroad, the wife should tidy the home, constantly keeping in mind her husband's goodness and not thinking of his faults. These are the five goods. What are the three evils? First, failing to serve her parents-in-law and husband with the etiquette of a wife, desiring only fine food to seize and eat first, going to bed early before dark, and not rising after the sun is up; if her husband scolds or instructs her, glaring at him, talking back, and cursing to herself. Second, not directing her mind single-mindedly toward her husband, but thinking of other men. Third, wishing for her husband to die so that she may soon remarry. These are the three evils.'
