When about to receive the precepts, one should first make vows. The "Chapter on the Bodhisattva's Receiving Precepts" states: At that time, Mañjuśrī addressed the Buddha, saying, "World-Honoured One, if a good son or good daughter receives the rules of the precepts received by bodhisattvas, what should they do?" The Buddha told Mañjuśrī, "Before the Buddha, with utmost sincerity, they should bow down and speak thus: 'I, so-and-so, pray that all Buddhas be mindful of me. Just as all Buddhas, World-Honoured Ones, correctly and fully enlightened ones, through the Buddha-wisdom, have no attachments, I shall arouse bodhicitta to benefit all sentient beings and cause them to attain peace and happiness. I arouse the mind set on the unsurpassed path, just as all Buddhas and bodhisattvas of the past, future, and present [have done]. I arouse the unsurpassed mind of bodhi toward all sentient beings, regarding them as my fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, men, women, kin, and friends, so that they may attain liberation and escape from saṃsāra, and even cause them to arouse the mind of sambodhi. I will diligently stir up vīrya, and bestow upon all sentient beings all material goods and Dharma according to their needs; through this wealth and Dharma, I will gather in all sentient beings, gradually adapting to what is appropriate. For the sake of liberating sentient beings and causing them to escape saṃsāra, even to causing them to abide securely in unsurpassed bodhi, I shall arouse vīrya; I shall not be heedless.' Thus, repeating this two and three times, this is called the initial arousal of bodhicitta by a bodhisattva-mahāsattva."
