If relying on the Brahmajāla-sūtra, its exposition of the ten major precepts is the same as that of the Yingluo jing; however, that text expounds in detail on doing [the acts] oneself, having others do them, rejoicing [in them], the causes of killing, conditions of killing, karmic acts of killing, and so on—differing merely in breadth and brevity. In the *Pure Conduct Upāsaka Precept Sūtra, the receiving of the ten inexhaustible [precepts] is the same as in the Yingluo benye jing. Furthermore, receiving the six pāramitā precepts, as well as the methods of prostration, taking refuge, and kṣamā, are completely identical to those for the ten inexhaustible [precepts]. However, the *Prior Exhortation Sūtra states: The Buddha emitted immeasurable mark-lights, which ascended beyond the three summits and descended to illuminate the hells and places of darkness, so that all were illuminated with great clarity, and those who had affinities gathered. The Buddha addressed the great assembly: "Listen single-mindedly and well! Those who wish to seek the unsurpassed true Dharma and bodhi must purify their three kinds of karma. Guarding the precepts and being prudent in practice, cultivating all one hundred dharmas together, converting beings with the ten virtues, being benevolent and compassionate toward sentient beings as though loving one's own children, taking pity on icchantikas, and rescuing [beings from] the suffering of the hells—once the hundred dharmas are complete, one vows that all sentient beings will experience great peace and happiness. Even if one cannot yet go in person to rescue them, one constantly generates this vow. Once this vow is fulfilled, one enters into Dharma-knowledge and cultivates the gotra; this is called a true bodhisattva, a great upāsaka. Sons of the Buddha! There are six great ships that can cross the great ocean, carry practitioners to the storehouse of the seven jewels, enter the flowing stream of the Dharma, wash away defilements and impurities, make the body clean and pure, make the three kinds of karma luminous, eradicate old age, sickness, and the obscurations of ignorance, cross over oneself, and furthermore be able to ferry others across. Therefore, sons of the Buddha should receive and uphold them. If there are those who uphold them, from their initial arousal of the mind up to marvelous enlightenment, they will bestow teachings in accordance with conditions. If there are sentient beings who respond to the true Dharma, they will manifest the form of a bodhisattva to go and cross them over; if they respond accordingly, they will manifest the form of an upāsaka to go and cross them over (like Avalokiteśvara and others)." The request to receive [the precepts] follows below.
